Web and Video Conferencing Solutions
Webinars / Webcasts
A webinar (short for web seminar or online seminar) is basically the
same type of web conferencing solution as a webcast (short for web
broadcast or online broadcast). These are used for giving a presentation
to a group of people that are all in different locations. This method
is rarely used for simple communication but it has been seen before just
to save the costs associated with an audio conferencing provider.
Webinars and webcasts are great for recording your presentation whereas
it might be complicated to record your powerpoint, then record your
voice over the powerpoint. This method would require lots of editing but
it will save you the costs of a web seminar but you will be unable to
do live webcast conferencing.
Videoconferencing
Videoconferencing is usually
used mainly for communication as it saves people the cost of taking the
plane or other transportation methods used to meet with your clients. It
is very important to differentiate videoconferencing and video chats.
Video chat requires very little bandwidth and is usually done with low
quality webcams. The video chat service is usually free or very cheap
with providers such as google, skype and oovoo. When people in the
corporate world mention videoconferencing you require a
videoconferencing bridge which can only be purchased from Cisco
(formerly Tandberg) or Polycom. Then you require individual codecs and
cameras to be able to connect to a bridge or another videoconferencing
codec directly using either IP or ISDN.
Telepresence
There is also a cheaper variety
of videoconferencing offered by these companies called telepresence and
it allows you to use webcams and Cisco phone cameras to connect to
videoconferencing systems and bridges.
